A Manitoba man has been charged with money laundering after Mounties found $400,000 in cash hidden in a car travelling on the Trans-Canada Highway west of Moose Jaw, Sask.
An officer stopped the vehicle Dec. 12 after noticing it weaving from side to side.
The Mountie discovered several large bundles of cash hidden within the car, including within the doors and behind the seats. A total of 10 packages of cash were seized _ each containing up to $40,000 in mainly $20, $50 and $100 bills.
RCMP said the money originated from organized criminal activities.
Robert Wasnie, 43, of Beausejour, Man., was charged with money laundering and possessing the proceeds of crime. He made his first court appearance in Moose Jaw on Friday and was released from custody. He is scheduled to reappear in court on Jan. 29.
''Cash is generated from a number of illegal activities _ sales of drugs would be one possibility,'' RCMP Sgt. Brad Kaeding said.
''I'm not sure if the investigators have been able to determine exactly what the true origin, I guess, of the cash was. If it is (determined), it may become part of a larger investigation, which hopefully we will hear about in the future.''
