The US government on Thursday expressed its interest to assist Bangladesh in combating terrorist financing by strengthening the capacity of the country's central bank, the Bangladesh Bank (BB) officials say in Dhaka.
The visiting Virginia Palmer, Deputy Coordinator, Counter Terrorism, US Department of State conveyed the message at a meeting with the BB Governor Salehuddin Ahmed.
The BB senior officials briefed Palmer on the overall measures that have already been taken by the central bank to curb illegal fund transfers through banking channel, they added.
The US deputy minister appreciated the central bank's initiatives for curbing terrorist financing and financial crimes in Bangladesh.
"I am impressed with the anti-money laundering measures...but more needs to be done," Palmer told reporters after the meeting at the central bank.
She also said they would continue their cooperation with Bangladesh in its efforts to stop illegal fund transfers.
The meeting also discussed about providing technical support to the newly setup Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) in the central bank.
"The US government agreed to provide necessary software for strengthening the functions of the FIU," a BB senior official told the AHN in the capital, Dhaka. "We are hopeful of the FIU being fully operational by early next year."
The FIU is a central national agency responsible for receiving, analyzing and disseminating information to competent authorities besides disclosing financial information on suspicious movement of funds.
